Morocco defender Issa Diop has insisted his decision to represent the Atlas Lions rather than Senegal was entirely his own, saying his family had “nothing to forgive” him for.

The 29-year-old, who was born in France to a Moroccan mother and a Senegalese father, discussed his international allegiance in an interview with Ipswich Town news outlet TWTD.

Diop was eligible to represent either of his parents’ countries before committing to Morocco earlier in 2026, having previously played for France at youth level.

Asked whether his family had forgiven him for not choosing Senegal, the defender said there was “nothing to forgive me for”, stressing that the decision was personal.D

“It was my decision,” he said, adding: “God wanted this for me, and that was my way.”

World Cup experience helped Diop grow

Diop also reflected on his first FIFA World Cup, where he made five appearances as Morocco reached the quarter-finals.

The defender said competing at the tournament had given him valuable experience, helping him develop the ability to handle different situations on the pitch.

He explained that international football presents challenges that differ from those at club level, both during matches and away from the field. Facing unfamiliar circumstances, he added, helps players learn how to respond when similar situations arise in the future.

Diop played key role in Morocco’s progress

One of Diop’s most memorable moments came against the Netherlands in the round of 32, when he scored his first international goal with a 91st-minute header to make it 1-1.

Morocco went on to win 3-2 in a penalty shootout to advance to the round of 16, with Diop named Man of the Match for his performance.

The Atlas Lions subsequently defeated Canada 3-0 to reach the quarter-finals, where they lost 2-0 to France.

Although Diop felt Morocco could have achieved more at the tournament, he regarded the experience as an important stage in his development.

Defender continues career in England

Diop joined Ipswich Town from Fulham during the summer transfer window and has continued his club career in English football.

His comments underline the personal nature of his decision to represent Morocco, despite his family connections to both Morocco and Senegal.
