Morocco national team head coach Walid Regragui was in Tanzania on Sunday afternoon to support RS Berkane in their clash against Simba SC in the second leg of the final of the CAF Confederation Cup.
In what marks an unprecedented move since taking charge of the Atlas Lions, Regragui, alongside his assistant Rachid Benmahmoud, was in the stands at the Amaan Stadium in Zanzibar to back the Moroccan club in the decisive second leg of the final.
His presence underscored the national significance of the match, as Berkane represented Morocco in one of Africa’s top club competitions.
Regragui had also attended the first leg in Berkane, but this visit marked the first time he had followed a Moroccan club outside the country for a continental fixture.
He was joined by former national team coach Rachid Taoussi and the current Azam FC coach, showing a unified front in support of RS Berkane’s continental campaign.
RS Berkane ultimately drew 1-1 with Simba SC to seal a 3-1 aggregate victory and lift their third CAF Confederation Cup title.
This is the third time the Moroccan club has clinched the CAF Confederation Cup title.
Notably, Walid Regragui has included three RS Berkane players in his squad for Morocco’s upcoming friendlies against Tunisia and Benin.
They include goalkeeper Mounir El Mohamady, defender Abdelhak Assal, and midfielder Yassine El Bhiri. Their inclusion highlights the growing influence of domestic league players in the national setup and the importance of Berkane’s recent success.
