Morocco: Walid Regragui reveals Fouzi Lekjaa’s key role in his decision to stay

The head coach of Morocco, Walid Regragui, has expressed his satisfaction with his team’s big win against Niger in the qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The North Africans became the first African nation to book a ticket to the 2026 edition, maintaining a flawless qualifying campaign with six wins out of six.

Their triumph in Rabat not only put them eight points clear of Tanzania at the top of Group E but also saw them equal Burkina Faso and Algeria’s tally of 19 goals in the group stage, despite having played a game fewer.

Speaking after the match, Regragui expressed delight at the achievement but stressed the need for his team to keep pushing forward.

“Six matches, six wins – even against teams that play with 10 men behind – it’s the start of the season for the players. Hamdulillah, I’m satisfied,” he said. “It’s historic. We keep building on this dynamic. At the end, the most important thing is qualification. The bar is high. Now, the expectation is to win every game, and fans are right to demand this.”

With Eritrea’s withdrawal, granting them a bye on matchday seven, Avram Grant’s men face a must-win situation in their remaining three matches if they are to challenge Tanzania for second place in the group.

Morocco will face Zambia at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium on Monday in what promises to be a crucial encounter for the hosts.
