Morocco national team head coach, Walid Regragui, was among the headline speakers at the first-ever International Coaches Congress hosted by the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) in Madrid from June 20 to 21.
The prestigious event attracted more than 550 coaches from around the world and featured presentations from approximately 20 top football minds, including delegates from FIFA and UEFA. Regragui’s invitation to speak underscores the growing international recognition of Moroccan coaching excellence and the country’s rising stature in global football.
Participating in a panel discussion on the responsibilities and pressures of modern coaching, Regragui spoke openly about the emotional weight of managing a national team in a football-loving country.
“We carry a great responsibility because the passion for football is immense. The entire country is behind us,” he remarked, reflecting the deep bond between the Moroccan national team and its supporters.
With Morocco preparing to host the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), expectations are mounting. Regragui has vowed to lead the Atlas Lions to continental glory on home soil. Despite the pressure, the coach expressed unwavering belief in his players and his own leadership.
“If there’s someone better than me, I’ll step aside. I’m the first fan of this team. I want to see Hakimi lift the trophy,” Regragui declared, drawing admiration for his humility and passion.
The Congress also featured high-profile football figures such as Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente, former Ecuador manager Gustavo Alfaro, and esteemed Uruguayan fitness coach Profe Ortega. Discussions focused on the evolution of coaching, the importance of ongoing education, and the value of a human-centered approach in football management.
According to the RFEF, the event was designed to highlight the pivotal role of coaches in the modern game and promote continuous learning as a catalyst for the sport’s development.
