Morocco clarifies AFCON 2025 dates amid uncertainty
Amid swirling rumors regarding the scheduling of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), the Moroccan Football Federation has moved to dispel speculation and provide clarity on the tournament’s timeline.
Fouzi Lekjaa, President of the Moroccan Football Federation, addressed concerns regarding the timing of AFCON 2025 in an interview with Marca, emphasizing Morocco’s commitment to hosting the prestigious event.
While the exact dates of the tournament remain undecided, Lekjaa affirmed Morocco’s readiness to accommodate the competition whenever it takes place.
Responding to conjecture suggesting a potential timeframe of July 20 to August 16-17, 2025, Véron Mosengo-Omba, Secretary General of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), clarified in February that CAF had not yet finalized the dates for AFCON 2025.
Lekjaa underscored Morocco’s determination to ensure the success of AFCON2025, affirming that the tournament would not coincide with the FIFA Club World Cup.
With the Club World Cup scheduled from June 15 to July 13, Lekjaa hinted at the possibility of hosting AFCON 2025 either after the conclusion of the Club World Cup or at an alternative time to enable the participation of African football stars.
