Morocco boss Mohamed Wahbi demands more despite winning start against Gabon

Morocco head coach Mohamed Wahbi says his side must continue improving after opening their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign with a 2-0 victory over Gabon.

The Atlas Lions secured the win through goals from Noussair Mazraoui and Soufiane Rahimi, taking control of the match and creating several further opportunities.

“I am extremely satisfied with the result of this match,” Wahbi told Moroccan website Le 360 Sport. “We played well, won the game, completely controlled the proceedings and created many chances. We could have scored more goals.”

Mazraoui put Morocco ahead in the 36th minute with a powerful strike that flew into the Gabon net.

Morocco had to wait until six minutes from time to add a second, with Rahimi finishing from a cross by Bilal El Khannouss in the 84th minute to secure their first victory of the qualifying campaign.

Wahbi said the performance was convincing but believed his team could produce an even better display.

“We were convincing, but we can perform better,” he added. “We demand a lot of ourselves and will continue to develop.”

The coach also praised Rahimi, while stressing that every member of the squad had an important role.

“We know Rahimi’s abilities very well. He is a fast and powerful player,” said Wahbi. “All the players are important to us and there is no hierarchy between them.”

Morocco now face a long journey to South Africa, something Wahbi had already highlighted to his players. He said the team would concentrate on the aspects of the trip and match that it could control.

“A long journey to South Africa awaits us,” he said. “I told the players that, but we will focus on what we can do. These journeys will help us develop and gain more experience.”

Morocco play Lesotho in the second round of qualifying next Tuesday, while Gabon face Niger on the same day.
