Morocco becomes first African country to qualify for 2026 World Cup after thrashing Niger
Morocco have officially booked their place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, becoming the first African nation to qualify after dismantling Niger 5-0 in Rabat on Friday night.
The Atlas Lions imposed themselves from the opening whistle, dictating play with fluid possession and relentless attacking pressure. Niger, by contrast, struggled to penetrate Morocco’s compact defensive lines.
Ismail Saibari set the tone in the 29th minute with a composed finish before doubling the advantage nine minutes later, this time connecting with an Achraf Hakimi assist. By halftime, the hosts were cruising with a two-goal cushion.
The second half brought no respite for the visitors. Ayoub El Kaabi stretched the lead to 3-0 in the 51st minute after being teed up by Youssef Belammari.
Substitute Hamza Igamane then added his name to the scoresheet on 69 minutes, converting from a Nayef Aguerd pass.
With the clock winding down, Azzedine Ounahi capped off the emphatic display, slotting home Morocco’s fifth in the 85th minute to spark wild celebrations inside the newly renovated Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, which reopened just a day earlier.
The occasion was marked by a stunning pre-match Tifo, with fans unveiling an image of a lion clutching the World Cup trophy alongside the words: “The Trophy Is Our Dream.”
Buoyed by memories of their historic 2022 run to the semi-finals in Qatar, Moroccan supporters are daring to dream again as Walid Regragui’s men prepare to carry Africa’s hopes on the global stage in 2026.
