Morocco announce plans for pre-world cup camp

Morocco head coach Mohamed Ouahbi has unveiled a 28-man squad for the national team’s final training camp ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with several surprise omissions and fresh faces attracting attention.

The training camp will take place at the Mohammed VI Football Complex as the Atlas Lions enter the last phase of preparations before the global tournament.

Hakimi and Diaz Left Out

Among the biggest talking points from the squad announcement was the absence of several established stars, including Yassine Bounou, Achraf Hakimi, and Brahim Diaz.

Youssef En-Nesyri was also left out of the squad amid a difficult spell with Saudi club Al-Ittihad.

The omissions suggest Wahbi is looking to assess alternative options before naming his final 26-man World Cup squad, which will form the backbone of Morocco’s campaign at the tournament.

Bouadi Earns First Call-Up

One of the standout inclusions in the squad is highly-rated youngster Ayoub Bouadi, who receives his first call-up to the national team setup.

The squad also features several notable names, including Al Ahly defender Youssef Belamri and striker Ayoub El Kaabi, who impressed during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Young talent Othmane Maama, who caught attention with his performances at the Youth World Cup, has also been included as Wahbi continues to build a squad blending experience with emerging talent.

Friendly Matches Scheduled Before Tournament

Morocco are expected to use the upcoming training camp to fine-tune tactics and evaluate player combinations ahead of the World Cup.

The Atlas Lions will play two international friendly matches against Burundi and Madagascar as part of their preparations for the competition.

The coaching staff is expected to closely monitor player fitness and performances during both matches before making final decisions on the official World Cup squad.

Tough Group Awaits Atlas Lions

At the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Morocco will compete in Group C alongside Brazil, Scotland, and Haiti.

The Atlas Lions will be aiming to build on their recent international progress as they prepare to face another major challenge on football’s biggest stage.
