Morocco and the United Kingdom have deepened their strategic partnership with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at strengthening preparations for the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
The agreement was signed on Monday at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Salé.
The MoU was endorsed by Morocco’s Minister Delegate for the Budget, Fouzi Lekjaa, and the UK’s Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, David Lammy.
It sets the stage for closer cooperation in critical areas such as sports infrastructure, transportation systems, and economic development in the lead-up to the tournament.
During his visit to Rabat, Lammy emphasised the UK’s commitment to fostering new economic partnerships across sectors.
“Growth and prosperity will underpin our relationship with Morocco and beyond, helping forge new opportunities at home and abroad,” he said, highlighting the UK’s broader strategy of building global alliances.
In a significant diplomatic development, Lammy also announced the UK’s formal support for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as a credible and practical resolution to the long-standing Western Sahara dispute.
Douglas Alexander, UK Minister for Trade Policy, echoed the sentiment, describing Morocco as a vital gateway for British trade and investment.
“Morocco is becoming an increasingly important trade and investment partner for the UK,” he noted.
The partnership goes beyond the World Cup—it reflects a shared ambition to use the tournament as a springboard for wider economic, social, and cultural development.
The UK has committed to sharing technical expertise and facilitating connections between Moroccan stakeholders and British companies experienced in delivering major international events.
From building modern stadiums to upgrading transport networks and refining event logistics, this collaboration aims to lay a solid foundation for the 2030 tournament.
For Morocco, the World Cup represents more than a sporting milestone. It aligns with the nation’s broader vision of using sport as a catalyst for development and international engagement.
The signing ceremony, attended by senior officials from both governments, marks the beginning of a practical and long-term partnership.
With the 2030 FIFA World Cup on the horizon, Morocco and the UK are poised to work side by side—driven by shared goals, expertise, and a strong spirit of cooperation.
