Sofyan Amrabat is once again at the centre of transfer speculation as reports suggest the Moroccan midfielder could be on his way to Zenit St. Petersburg in the upcoming summer window.
Turkish media outlets report that Fenerbahçe head coach José Mourinho has given his approval for Amrabat’s departure, paving the way for a potential move to Russia.
The 27-year-old, currently on loan at the Turkish club, is under contract with Italian side Fiorentina until 2028.
According to the reports, Fenerbahçe may look to activate the €12 million purchase option in Amrabat’s loan agreement, only to then arrange a loan move to Zenit Saint Petersburg.
This two-step process would allow the Istanbul club to retain some control over the player while also benefiting financially from a secondary deal.
“The Turkish club could exercise the option to buy the player, for 12 million euros, in order to recruit him permanently and then loan him to Zenit Saint Petersburg,” the report stated.
Amrabat’s career has been marked by a search for consistency and clarity, both in terms of his role on the pitch and his broader professional trajectory.
The Moroccan international joined Manchester United on loan last season, where he featured regularly but failed to cement a long-term future at Old Trafford.
His move to Fenerbahçe was also on a temporary basis, continuing a pattern of short-term spells that has defined his recent career.
As the summer window approaches, Amrabat faces another crucial decision about his next destination.
While a move to Zenit would provide a fresh challenge in the Russian Premier League, it remains to be seen whether it aligns with his personal goals and desire for long-term stability.
The former Utrecht, Feyenoord, and Club Brugge player has remained tight-lipped on the matter, focusing instead on finishing the current campaign.
However, with Fiorentina, Fenerbahçe, and Zenit all potentially involved in the negotiations, the coming weeks are likely to be pivotal in determining his future.
Amrabat’s next move could not only reshape his individual career but also impact the transfer strategies of the clubs involved, particularly Fenerbahçe, who would be orchestrating a key piece of summer business if the proposed plan goes ahead.
