Girona FC are preparing a fresh approach for Moroccan midfielder Azzedine Ounahi, with plans to table an improved offer of €5 million plus bonuses to Olympique de Marseille during the summer transfer window.
The Catalan club view the 24-year-old as a technically gifted midfielder who could strengthen their options in the heart of the pitch. Determined to secure his signature, Girona’s board believe the inclusion of additional incentives could persuade Marseille to agree to the deal.
Competing offers and Panathinaikos interest
Panathinaikos, where Ounahi spent last season on loan, had already attempted to sign him permanently for €10 million. However, despite the higher figure, the Moroccan international showed little interest in returning to Greece. Sources close to the player suggest his priority is to continue his career in one of Europe’s top leagues, aligning with his long-term ambitions.
During his year in Athens, Ounahi made 30 appearances across all competitions, scoring once and delivering two assists. His performances highlighted both consistency and composure in midfield, underlining his readiness for a more competitive stage.
Dispute with former agent
Ounahi’s future has also been shaped by a fallout with his former representative, ex-Morocco captain Medhi Benatia. The two parted ways following disagreements over the player’s career direction.
Benatia is understood to have pushed for a move to Qatar in the summer of 2024, an option Ounahi firmly rejected in favour of continuing his development in European football.
Although their professional relationship has ended, a contractual clause reportedly entitles Benatia to a percentage of any future transfer, adding further tension to the situation.
Ounahi’s determination to choose the right path
According to reports, Ounahi has at least three other offers under consideration. Yet his focus remains on finding a project that aligns with his aspirations, even if it means remaining at Marseille until the expiry of his contract. The midfielder is said to prefer playing in Spain, making LaLiga his top priority.
“If the project doesn’t match his ambitions, he is prepared to stay at Marseille, even with the reserves,” a source close to the player was quoted as saying.
Career to date
Since joining Marseille from Angers in January 2023, Ounahi has made 35 appearances, scoring twice and providing one assist. Prior to his Ligue 1 breakthrough, he impressed in Greece with OFI Crete, playing 34 matches, scoring once, and registering three assists.
Now a key figure for the Atlas Lions, Ounahi’s decision in the coming weeks could define the next stage of his career. A move to Spain, in particular, would not only suit his style but also mark a significant step towards fulfilling his ambition of competing regularly at the highest level in European football.
