Azzedine Ounahi has officially joined Spanish side Girona, leaving Olympique de Marseille after a brief stint in France.

The 25-year-old Moroccan midfielder, who rose to prominence following an impressive display at the 2022 World Cup with Morocco, has signed with the La Liga club for a reported fee of €6 million.

Girona confirmed the transfer on Friday, marking Ounahi’s first permanent move to Spain.

Ounahi initially arrived at Marseille in 2023 from Angers, where his performances in Ligue 1 had attracted significant attention. His time at Marseille, however, was limited, and he spent last season on loan at Panathinaikos in Greece, where he sought regular playing time and further development.

The Moroccan international’s departure represents a loss for Marseille, who had hoped to integrate him into their midfield plans. Despite his brief tenure, Ounahi showed glimpses of the creativity, energy, and technical ability that earned him recognition on the international stage.

His performances for Morocco, particularly at the World Cup, were instrumental in raising his profile across European football.

For Girona, the signing of Ounahi is a strategic move aimed at strengthening their midfield options. The club, recently competing in La Liga, is investing in talent capable of adding both creativity and stability to their squad.

Ounahi’s versatility allows him to operate in various central and attacking midfield roles, offering manager flexibility as the team navigates the challenges of Spain’s top division.

Ounahi becomes one of the latest Moroccan internationals to make an impact in La Liga, joining the ranks of players seeking to bring their international experience to European club football. Girona’s acquisition underscores the club’s ambition to compete at a higher level and reflects their targeted approach in the transfer market.

The transfer also highlights the growing trend of Moroccan players leveraging international tournaments to secure moves across Europe. Ounahi’s World Cup performances remain a key reference point for clubs evaluating his potential impact in top-tier leagues.

As Girona prepare for the upcoming La Liga campaign, Ounahi’s presence is expected to bolster the midfield, offering creativity, vision, and a proven ability to influence games at both club and international levels. The move marks a significant step in his career, providing him with an opportunity to establish himself in one of Europe’s most competitive leagues.

With the transfer now complete, all eyes will be on Ounahi as he integrates into Girona’s squad. Fans will be eager to see how the Moroccan international adapts to La Liga’s pace and style, and whether he can replicate the form that has defined his rapid rise from Angers to Marseille and now to Spain.
