Athletic Bilbao striker Maroan Sannadi will undergo surgery on Monday to treat a persistent meniscus injury that has troubled him for months.
The Moroccan forward began the season with recurring pain in his right knee, caused by a progressive meniscal problem, the Basque club confirmed in a statement on Thursday.
Medical staff initially opted for conservative treatment, which allowed Sannadi to feature in recent matches.
However, his discomfort increased in recent weeks, forcing the decision to proceed with surgery.
The procedure will take place in Bilbao on November 3 and will be performed arthroscopically. The club did not specify how long Sannadi will be sidelined following the operation.
Sannadi’s absence comes at a critical moment for Athletic Bilbao, who face Real Sociedad in the Basque derby on Saturday at the Reale Arena.
His injury adds to the club’s growing list of unavailable players.
Iñaki Williams, Iñigo Lekue, and Yeray Álvarez will also miss the match due to fitness issues, while Aymeric Laporte’s participation remains uncertain.
Sannadi’s injury presents a challenge for Bilbao’s attacking options, as his pace and creativity have been key components of the team’s offensive play this season.
The 22-year-old striker’s performances have impressed both fans and coaches, making his temporary absence a significant blow.
The timing of the surgery also affects Sannadi’s international prospects with Morocco.
With the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations approaching, the forward will hope for a quick recovery to regain full fitness and form in time for national selection.
Athletic Bilbao, currently managing a congested fixture list, will rely on their depth to fill the void left by Sannadi. Manager Ernesto Valverde may turn to younger forwards to step up in the striker’s absence, as the team seeks to maintain its momentum in La Liga.
The club will provide further updates on Sannadi’s recovery progress after the surgery.
