Moroccan international Sofiane El Karouani is on the brink of a move to Olympique Marseille, with the French club entering advanced talks to secure his transfer from FC Utrecht just hours before the winter window closes.
According to French outlet L’Équipe, the left-back has been a top target for Marseille, with club scouts monitoring his performances over recent months. Initially linked to a potential summer transfer, the deal has accelerated in the final hours of the current transfer period.
El Karouani is contracted to Utrecht until June 2026, but Marseille are eager to complete the transfer early, seeking a technically proficient and physically ready player who can immediately strengthen their left flank.
While other clubs, including Leeds United and Sporting Lisbon, have expressed interest, sources indicate that the French side currently leads the race, with unanimous backing from the club’s sporting management.
Reports further suggest that Olympique Marseille sporting director Mehdi Benatia has reached a preliminary agreement with El Karouani on a long-term contract running until 2030, pending final negotiations with Utrecht.
The move reflects the Moroccan defender’s exceptional season in the Netherlands, where the 25-year-old has already scored three goals and provided 15 assists across competitions, establishing himself as one of the standout full-backs in the Dutch league.
Should the transfer be finalised, El Karouani will embark on a new chapter in his career, joining one of France’s biggest clubs.
