Morocco’s ambassador to Senegal, Hassan Nassiri, has dismissed online reports claiming that Moroccans were attacked following the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final, describing the allegations as “completely unfounded.”
In an interview with Le Site info, Nassiri assured that there was “no cause for concern” for Moroccan nationals in Senegal.
He confirmed that while a café experienced material damage, including broken windows, equipment destruction, and the theft of five motorcycles—two of which belonged to Senegalese citizens—no Moroccans were physically harmed.
The ambassador emphasized that the Moroccan community remains in regular contact with embassy officials.
“We have a WhatsApp group with the students where we communicate regularly, and fortunately everything is going well,” he said, adding that students are continuing their studies without interruption.
Nassiri also confirmed that the embassy has visited the affected café, met with Senegalese authorities, and issued guidance to Moroccan nationals on maintaining vigilance and caution.
“Fortunately, no deaths have been recorded,” he stated, noting that the Senegalese police investigation is ongoing to identify those responsible for the incident that caused fear within the Moroccan community.
The 2025 AFCON final, in which Senegal defeated Morocco, was already overshadowed by a series of off-field incidents.
These included the temporary withdrawal of Senegalese players in protest against a penalty awarded to Morocco, as well as disturbances in the stands of the Moulay Abdellah Stadium, caused by some Senegalese supporters, which drew attention worldwide.
The ambassador’s intervention seeks to clarify the situation and reassure Moroccans in Senegal that their safety is being closely monitored.
Embassy officials remain in close contact with the community, providing emergency contact numbers and instructions to mitigate risks following the off-field unrest surrounding the tournament’s final.
