Morgan Rogers: Chelsea sign England midfielder in British record £117m deal

Chelsea have shattered the British transfer record by signing England midfielder Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa in a deal worth £117m – despite not playing in the Champions League this season.

The 23-year-old has agreed a contract at Stamford Bridge until 2033, the club confirmed on Tuesday, in what is also the most expensive signing in Chelsea’s history.

“The 23-year-old forward has signed a contract at Stamford Bridge until 2033,” the London club posted on their web site.

Rogers completed his medical on Monday after returning from England duty at the 2026 World Cup in North America, where he featured in the semi-final defeat by Argentina in Atlanta.

Rogers said he had long dreamed of joining Chelsea and highlighted the club’s new project under head coach Xabi Alonso as a decisive factor.

“I’m so excited,” said Rogers. “For me, Chelsea are the biggest club in London and a club I’ve always admired since I was a kid,” Rogers was quoted as saying by the club.

“I’m really excited about the project with the new manager, the players we’ve got and where the club is heading. That’s why I’m here and I can’t wait to get started.”

The move underlines Chelsea’s determination to rebuild after finishing 10th in the Premier League last season and missing out on European competition.

Record fee eclipses Anderson and Fernandez

The £117m price tag, reported by British media, surpasses the previous record for a British player set earlier in July when Manchester City paid £116m to sign England midfielder Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest.

Rogers also becomes Chelsea’s costliest player, overtaking the £107m the club paid Benfica for Enzo Fernandez in 2023.

The size of the fee proved too high for Premier League champions Arsenal, who had also pursued Rogers but ultimately refused to match Aston Villa’s valuation. Chelsea, who had tracked the player for two years, moved decisively to secure his signature.

Blow to Villa as key man departs

Rogers’ exit represents another significant loss for Villa manager Unai Emery, following Youri Tielemans’ move to Manchester United and Lucas Digne’s expected transfer to Paris Saint-Germain.

“A player with impeccable behaviour and commitment, Morgan leaves Aston Villa with the best wishes of everyone at the football club for both his service to the club and for his future career,” said Villa on their website.

“He will always remain a core part of our recent great moments and memories,” said Villa.

Rogers scored 21 goals in 85 league games for Villa and was instrumental in their Europa League triumph over Freiburg in May, crowning a breakthrough season in which he registered 14 goals and 11 assists in 55 appearances.

Championship side Middlesbrough are set for a sizeable windfall, receiving 20% of the transfer fee due to a sell-on clause inserted when they sold Rogers to Villa in 2024.

Selection puzzle for Alonso

Rogers’ arrival adds further competition to Chelsea’s attacking midfield and wide positions, with Alonso now needing to accommodate Rogers, Cole Palmer, Pedro Neto, Estevao Willian and fellow summer signing Geovany Quenda.

The signing is likely to accelerate the departure of Argentine winger Alejandro Garnacho, who is expected to be sold before the transfer window closes.

Rogers is close friends with Palmer, the pair having come through Manchester City’s youth ranks together. Palmer’s now-famous ‘cold’ celebration was originally inspired by Rogers, who first used the pose while playing for Middlesbrough.

Chelsea hope the signing will demonstrate that, even outside European competition, they remain an attractive destination for elite talent.

Rogers will join up with his new team-mates after a short break, following his involvement in England’s run to the World Cup semi-finals.
