Kaizer Chiefs defender Inacio Miguel faces suspension and contract uncertainty after red card
Inacio Miguel will miss Kaizer Chiefs’ next two fixtures after being sent off in Saturday’s Soweto Derby against Orlando Pirates, with the defender’s latest disciplinary setback also threatening his future at the club.
The 30-year-old was shown a red card at FNB Stadium as Kaizer Chiefs suffered defeat by their biggest rivals. When he returns, Miguel will already have three yellow cards to his name, leaving him one booking away from another suspension.
Miguel’s disciplinary record has increasingly made him a regular concern for referees. Before the derby, he had been cautioned against Mamelodi Sundowns, Siwelele FC and Stellenbosch FC.
His time at Naturena began with an especially high number of bookings. He was suspended twice in his first six matches: once after collecting four yellow cards, and again following the red card he received against Mamelodi Sundowns in a Carling Knockout humiliation two years ago.
The situation then improved, with his next four yellow cards coming across 21 matches. However, Miguel ended last season with 10 bookings, resulting in two suspensions in domestic competition.
In the 2026/27 season, he has already received three yellow cards and one red. Two of those yellow cards came during Saturday’s Soweto Derby, a record that is beginning to make former defenders Morgan Gould and Andrew Rabutla appear unusually disciplined by comparison.
Miguel’s latest suspension comes at a difficult point in his position at Kaizer Chiefs. Rushwin Dortley is now available again, and Miguel has already lost his grip on a regular starting place.
There are also suggestions that the club could impose further penalties on him because of the sending-off. Such action could damage his prospects of securing an extension to his contract, which expires at the end of June.
Miguel’s representatives have been pushing for a new deal. He joined Kaizer Chiefs from Petro de Luanda in July 2024 on a three-year contract, and the financial terms of that agreement have improved for the current season.
The defender’s immediate priority will be serving the two-match suspension, but his return will come with little room for further disciplinary mistakes. With three yellow cards already recorded after Saturday’s dismissal, another booking would trigger a further ban.
