Morena Ramoreboli joins Pitso Mosimane’s new Bafana Bafana coaching team

Morena Ramoreboli has been appointed as an assistant coach to Pitso Mosimane, completing the main structure of the new Bafana Bafana technical team ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.

The appointment was confirmed on Tuesday by the South African Football Association (SAFA) and the Botswana Football Association. Ramoreboli will leave his role with Botswana, known as The Zebras, to return to the South African national-team setup.

Mosimane was named Bafana Bafana head coach last week and had already confirmed the appointments of his long-standing assistants Kabelo Rangoaga and Musi Matlaba. At the time, however, he said one further assistant position remained to be filled.

That vacancy has now been given to Ramoreboli, who has previously served as Bafana Bafana’s interim coach.

The 46-year-old brings recent international management experience to Mosimane’s staff after his spell in charge of Botswana. He has also held coaching positions at club level in South Africa and elsewhere on the African continent.

His appointment reflects Mosimane’s intention to form a technical team around coaches who understand and complement his methods. The new Bafana Bafana manager has opted not to retain every member of Hugo Broos’ previous backroom staff.

Former Bafana Bafana assistant Helman Mkhalele was not kept on following Broos’ departure. Mosimane had explained that coaches usually prefer to work with trusted members of their own technical teams.

Ramoreboli’s return gives the national setup another coach with experience of both international and domestic football, while also providing continuity from his earlier involvement with Bafana Bafana.

“We are delighted to welcome Morena Ramoreboli back into the Bafana Bafana environment. He has earned this opportunity through his achievements and his consistent growth as a coach over many years,” SAFA president Danny Jordaan said.

The appointment comes only weeks before South Africa begin their qualification campaign for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations. Mosimane must now integrate his new coaching staff before Bafana Bafana’s opening fixtures.

South Africa are scheduled to play Guinea on the 26th of this month and will then face Eritrea. The limited preparation time means Mosimane and his assistants will have to establish their working methods quickly as the team begins a new era under the former coach.

For Ramoreboli, the move represents a return to the national-team environment and the opportunity to work alongside Mosimane. His arrival also completes a significant part of the new Bafana Bafana coaching structure as South Africa prepare for their next qualifying campaign.
