Montpellier sign Alpha Sissoko on free transfer from Guingamp

Malian-French right-back Alpha Sissoko has joined Montpellier from Guingamp on a free transfer, strengthening the Ligue 2 club’s defensive options.

The 29-year-old has signed a contract with Montpellier until 30 June 2029 after leaving Guingamp, where he spent the past two seasons. Sissoko’s move was completed on 31 August 2026, with no transfer fee involved.

Sissoko is a right-footed defender whose senior career has been spent largely in the French professional game. He has made 151 Ligue 2 appearances and provided 12 assists in the competition, alongside appearances in Ligue 1, the Coupe de France and France’s lower divisions.

His experience at second-tier level includes spells with Quevilly-Rouen Metropole and Guingamp. He joined Guingamp from QRM in July 2024, also on a free transfer, having previously left Saint-Etienne for the Normandy club in January 2022.

Sissoko began his senior career with Clermont Foot, progressing from the club’s youth system to its reserve side before moving into the first team. He later joined Saint-Etienne in 2019 and spent part of the 2019-20 season on loan at Le Puy Foot.

The defender was born in Bondy, France, on 7 March 1997 and stands 1.78 metres tall. His arrival gives Montpellier an experienced option at right-back as they continue their Ligue 2 campaign.

Sissoko’s career record also includes 10 Ligue 1 appearances, while he has featured in the Coupe de la Ligue and the L2/N1 and L1/L2 play-offs. His most extensive body of work, however, has come in Ligue 2, where his 151 appearances underline his familiarity with the division.

Montpellier have secured Sissoko’s services without a fee, with the right-back now contracted to the club through June 2029.
