Rothen expressed his disapproval, stating, “It’s a deplorable attitude for a player on the squad, especially the team captain. How can you lead, motivate, and advise a group if you leave the stadium before the match even begins? Abidal’s role goes beyond just being a player. He accepted this responsibility at the start of the season, and it’s his duty to fulfill it. Players should not be affected by the coach’s decisions. I’ve had disagreements with coaches before, and have been excluded from the squad, but I always stood by the team during matches, supporting them in every possible way, whether in the stadium or the locker room.”
However, some observers believe that the actions of coach Claudio Ranieri are also open to criticism.
