Monaco and Chelsea locked in battle over £50m-rated Lamine Camara

Chelsea are stepping up their pursuit of Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara, with the French club determined to resist the Blues’ attempts to prise away their £50 million-rated star before the transfer deadline.

Chelsea have already seen an opening offer of £38.5 million rejected but remain convinced the Senegal international possesses the qualities needed to inject fresh energy into their midfield.

Camara was identified internally a month ago as a potential replacement for Enzo Fernandez, with Chelsea’s recruitment team developing a plan to bring the 22-year-old to Stamford Bridge.

The Blues have also monitored Roma midfielder Manu Kone as the deadline approaches, but Camara has emerged as the player who has generated the greatest excitement among Chelsea’s recruitment staff because of his age, profile and long-term potential.

Monaco determined to hold on

Chelsea are now considering an improved proposal, although Monaco are mounting their own efforts to prevent Camara from leaving.

The Ligue 1 side recognise the difficulty of keeping the midfielder amid Chelsea’s interest but are understood to want close to £50 million before considering his departure. Negotiations remain ongoing.

The talks are unfolding alongside Chelsea’s preparations to sell Fernandez to Manchester City in one of the biggest deals of the transfer window.

While Fernandez’s potential exit has forced Chelsea to accelerate their search for a replacement, there is growing confidence within the club that Camara could be the right solution if an agreement can be reached.

Alonso sees Camara as perfect fit

Chelsea are also understood to be satisfied with Camara’s personal terms, with a five-year contract being discussed.

The midfielder’s tactical intelligence is a major attraction, particularly as Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso looks to establish his preferred style of play at Stamford Bridge.

Alonso believes Camara has the vision, intelligence and positional discipline required to operate at the highest level and help his team control matches from midfield.

Chelsea’s hierarchy are keen to give Alonso their full backing and have therefore explored the possibility of returning with a second bid for Camara.

However, the club remain wary of the unpredictable nature of deadline-day negotiations, where valuations, terms and demands can shift rapidly.

For now, Chelsea’s official position is that they remain focused on finding a replacement for Fernandez — with Camara increasingly at the centre of that search.
