Moloisane says fierce Bafana Bafana centre-back battle is a sign of South Africa’s rising talent
Thabo Moloisane believes the increasingly competitive race for places in the Bafana Bafana defence reflects the strength of South Africa’s developing football talent.
The Kaizer Chiefs defender was speaking to SABC Sport on Thursday afternoon at the Chiefs Village in Naturena, where he acknowledged that securing a place in the national team has become more difficult.
Moloisane was among the centre-backs given an opportunity under former Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos. However, a growing number of contenders are now competing for selection and starting positions.
The defender says regular performances for Kaizer Chiefs can help him earn a return to the national team squad.
“It is very long, but credit to the guys; they are doing well. The credit must go to them. And for me, I must also continue working hard. I had a bit of a difficult season in the last campaign, but I am happy that I am starting to play and feel like myself again. I am sure that as I continue working hard, I will be back in the setup. Who wouldn’t want to be in that setup anyway?” said Moloisane.
The competition at centre-back also highlights the progress being made through South Africa’s football development structures, with several players having come through established academies.
The return to action of US-based defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi has added to the selection challenge for Bafana Bafana head coach Pitso Mosimane. The options also include Ime Okon, Olwethu Makhanya and Lebone Seema, following the emergence of new defensive combinations.
Moloisane will face Stellenbosch FC for the first time on Friday since leaving the club for Kaizer Chiefs in June. He spent almost four seasons with Stellenbosch FC and made more than 115 appearances in all competitions.
The Mamelodi Sundowns youth product remains appreciative of the part Stellenbosch FC played in his development, but said the fixture carries significance for both him and Kaizer Chiefs.
Kaizer Chiefs have kept only two clean sheets in all competitions this season and have conceded in six of their opening eight matches.
Moloisane is aware that the defensive record must improve if the club are to make progress.
The meeting will therefore be a personal return for the defender, as well as an opportunity for Kaizer Chiefs to address a weakness that has affected the team during the opening part of the campaign.
