Mohamed Salah explains how being relieved of defending duties helped him score more goals

Mohamed Salah has credited a change in tactical responsibilities for his outstanding season as Liverpool clinched the 2024/25 Premier League title.

The Egyptian star, who scored 28 goals and provided 18 assists in the league campaign, revealed that being relieved of some defensive duties under manager Arne Slot allowed him to focus more on delivering offensively.

“You can see the numbers! Now I don’t have to defend much,” Salah said.

“The tactics are quite different. I said, ‘As long as you rest me defensively I will provide offensively’, so I am glad that I did. He listened a lot and you can see the numbers.”

Salah, who has now won two Premier League titles with Liverpool, further explained: “When you play in the Premier League you have to defend.

“But I said that I can gamble and somehow I can make a difference. My number of assists shows that, you can create chances as well.”

Reflecting on Sunday’s celebrations at Anfield, Salah described the experience as even more special than Liverpool’s 2020 title triumph, particularly given the changes in the squad and the atmosphere.

“Ah, this is way better (with a full Anfield) 100 per cent,” Salah said. “Without Sadio (Mané), without Jurgen (Klopp), without Bobby (Firmino), with everybody it feels more special, with the fans.”

He continued: “You have a different group now, a different manager and you show you are able to do it again – it’s something special.”
