Mohamed Salah earns major BBC nomination despite rising tensions

Mohamed Salah receives uplifting news in the midst of Liverpool’s ongoing turmoil, earning a nomination for the prestigious BBC Sports Personality of the Year award just days after publicly criticising manager Arne Slot.

The Egyptian forward finds himself on the shortlist shortly after a fiery post-match interview in which he voiced frustration over repeated omissions from the starting lineup.

Salah sat on the bench for the third consecutive match during Liverpool’s 3–3 draw with Leeds United, a game in which the team fell behind twice and struggled for control.

Salah confronted the situation with strong words after the match, stating that he felt “betrayed” and suggesting that the club no longer valued his contributions. His comments intensified speculation around his future at Anfield, especially with the Africa Cup of Nations approaching.

Liverpool continues to face significant pressure, as Slot has secured only two league victories in September.

The club’s title defence already appears derailed, and Liverpool must win three matches to avoid the playoffs and maintain their Champions League hopes.

Despite the growing tension, Salah earns recognition for an outstanding 2024/25 season.

He appears on the BBC’s list alongside prominent figures such as boxer Terence Crawford after leading Liverpool’s title-winning campaign with 29 goals and 18 assists.

In announcing the shortlist, the BBC praised his historic season, noting that Salah “broke a host of records by helping Liverpool equal the record of 20 English league titles.”

The organisation highlighted his unprecedented achievement of winning the Golden Boot, the Premier League assists award, and the Premier League Player of the Year award all in the same season.

Salah also secured the PFA Player of the Year title for a third time and earned the Football Writers’ award for the third time.

At 33, he surpassed Sergio Agüero’s Premier League scoring record for a foreign player, reaching a new all-time high.

This season, Salah has scored five goals in 18 appearances. His nomination offers a rare moment of positivity as uncertainty hangs over his relationship with Slot and his long-term future at the club.
