Mohamed Salah has revealed that he was engaged in serious discussions with a Saudi Arabian club before committing to a new contract with Liverpool in mid-April.
Speaking to On Sport, the Egyptian forward acknowledged that negotiations had taken place, confirming long-standing speculation about his potential move to the Middle East.
“There was a good opportunity to join the Saudi League,” Salah admitted. “Serious negotiations to recruit him” were underway, he added, describing the offer as significant.
Although the deal did not come to fruition, Salah’s comments leave the door open for a possible future move.
Reports during the last winter transfer window suggested that Al-Hilal, the Saudi Pro League club that recently signed Neymar, had identified Salah as a prime target.
While those efforts failed, the Egyptian star maintains positive ties with key figures in Saudi football. “My relations with the people there are still good and continue,” he said.
Salah also took the opportunity to dismiss fresh rumours linking him with a move to Spanish giants Real Madrid or Barcelona, stating plainly that such speculation is unfounded.
The 32-year-old, who joined Liverpool in 2017, credited the club’s supporters with playing a crucial role in his decision to remain at Anfield.
“Liverpool fans were part of the contract renewal process, they put pressure on the management, because I have been at the club for seven years. From the first day, I knew they wanted me to stay,” he said. His bond with the fanbase, built over more than 400 appearances in the red shirt, continues to be a defining aspect of his career.
Salah’s performances on the pitch remain as impactful as ever.
He finished the Premier League season with 29 goals and 18 assists in just 38 matches—a testament to his enduring influence and elite-level consistency.
At a time when many players his age begin to wind down their careers, the Egyptian appears far from finished.
While Saudi interest may have been strong, Salah’s heart remains in Liverpool, at least for now.
However, his candid remarks suggest that the lure of the Saudi Pro League remains a real possibility in the years ahead.
