Mohamed Salah unlocked a new milestone on Wednesday night when Liverpool travelled to face Olympique Marseille at the Velodrome Stadium in the UEFA Champions League.
Liverpool manager Arne Slot named Salah in his starting lineup, alongside Alisson, Frimpong, Gomez, Virgil van Dijk, Kerkez, Dominik Szoboszlai, Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister, Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz.
The Egyptian forward’s inclusion marks a significant moment in his European journey with the club.
According to Opta statistics, the clash against Marseille represents Salah’s 88th appearance in major European competitions for Liverpool. With that figure, he has now equalled the record previously held by Ian Callaghan for continental matches played for the Reds.
Only Steven Gerrard, with 111 appearances, and Jamie Carragher, who leads the list with 130, remain ahead of him.
The match also marks Salah’s first Champions League start since Liverpool’s defeat to PSV Eindhoven 56 days ago. His return comes after international duty with Egypt, whose Africa Cup of Nations campaign ended with a fourth-place finish behind Senegal, Morocco and Nigeria.
With Steven Gerrard’s long-standing record now within sight, the Egyptian forward continues to cement his legacy as one of Liverpool’s most influential European performers.
Liverpool head into the fixture sitting eleventh in the Champions League standings with 12 points, while Marseille occupy seventeenth place with nine points, setting the stage for a crucial encounter under the lights in France.
