Mohamed Salah has broken his silence over the controversy surrounding his post-match remarks after Egypt’s dramatic 3–1 extra-time victory over Benin in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, shedding light on the context behind his comments.

The Liverpool forward, whose last-minute goal secured Egypt’s place in the quarter-finals, said his words were misinterpreted by some fans and media, who suggested he was undermining his team’s chances of lifting the trophy.

Egypt advanced to the quarter-finals with their round-of-16 win at Adrar Stadium in Agadir, a match that showcased the determination of a largely domestic-based squad.

Salah, who scored his third goal of the tournament in the final moments, played a decisive role in the triumph.

Yet, his comments after the game prompted debate, as observers believed he was downplaying Egypt’s ambitions in comparison to traditional favourites such as Morocco, Algeria and Côte d’Ivoire.

Context of Salah’s remarks

Speaking to the Confederation of African Football after the match, Salah emphasized Egypt’s competitiveness rather than suggesting any limitations.

“I think physically we were better than the opponent, which gave us a slight advantage. There is no easy game in Africa, to be honest. The levels are quite close.

“I told the boys that there are no teams that will lose 4 or 5–0, for example. Benin have a team, a coach and a good structure, and I’m happy to get the win in the end.”

When asked if Egypt would remain in the shadows compared to other title contenders, Salah clarified: “I don’t think we are favourites to win the title at all.

“We have young players, most of them play in Egypt. We fight for our country and we will see how far we can go. Everyone gives their maximum and you could see that today in the game. That’s all I can say.”

Reflecting on the journey

Salah concluded by reflecting on his personal growth and the pride of leading Egypt: “I don’t think when I was young I dreamed of playing at this level, to be able to play with good players and at this standard.”

The comments highlight Salah’s focus on realism and collective effort, underscoring the challenges of relying on a domestic-heavy squad in a tournament where margins are fine and every match is fiercely contested.

His words, when viewed in full context, reinforce his belief in his young teammates and the fight required to advance further in AFCON 2025.
