Mohamed Sahil, the former Wydad player and a national coach, has characterized the current state of the “Red Team” as a natural phase of turmoil and instability, coupled with an early exit from the group stage of the African Champions League, considering the recent circumstances the club has endured.
In a statement to “Hesport,” Sahil expressed that Wydad’s elimination from the group stage of the league came as a shock, especially considering the club’s remarkable track record in the past decade, which is challenging to replicate in terms of pace and effectiveness.
“The elimination was unexpected, but understanding the reasons behind it is not surprising. Several factors have affected Wydad’s natural course, from managerial issues to the absence of the president, changes in coaching staff, and the closure of Mohamed V Stadium, coupled with the absence of supporters… All these factors have contributed to Wydad experiencing a period of instability,” Sahil elaborated.
Sahil believes that Wydad’s current situation is challenging, but overcoming it is not beyond their capabilities.
He added, “The team’s exit from the competition is confirmed.
Now, the Moroccan league remains, where the team currently sits in fourth place, trailing significantly behind the qualifying positions for the league.
However, everything is possible… and we must not forget the Throne Cup competitions, which have been absent from the team’s achievements for a long time.”
Furthermore, Sahil emphasized that the uncertain present is concerning, awaiting clarity after the general assembly meeting.
He called for unity within the Wydad family to restore the team to its normal state soon.
Wydad Athletic Club’s exit from the African Champions League competition occurred despite finishing third, with goal difference being the decider against the second-placed qualifier, Simba SC of Tanzania.
Additionally, the club currently occupies the fourth position in the Moroccan league standings, with 31 points, trailing the leader by 18 points, with three postponed matches yet to be played.
