World Cup 2026: Mohamed Ouahbi awaits injury verdict on Mazraoui and Ezzalzouli
Morocco coach Mohamed Ouahbi says the national team’s medical staff is still assessing the injuries suffered by Noussair Mazraoui and Abde Ezzalzouli after both players were forced off during the Atlas Lions’ final warm-up match before the 2026 World Cup.
The injury concerns emerged during Morocco’s 1-1 draw against Norway at the Sports Illustrated Stadium in New Jersey, a result that brought an end to the team’s preparations ahead of their opening World Cup fixture against Brazil on 13 June.
Speaking after the match, Ouahbi explained that Norway had been deliberately selected as Morocco’s final opponent before the tournament because of the challenge the Scandinavian side would provide.
“We chose Norway to play a match of this caliber, against a team with great technical and athletic qualities,” said Ouahbi at the press conference held after this friendly match which ended in a draw (1-1).
The Moroccan coach said the encounter offered an important opportunity to measure his team’s readiness against strong opposition and to identify areas that still require improvement before the start of the competition.
While he expressed satisfaction with several aspects of his side’s display, Ouahbi admitted he would have preferred to end the preparation campaign with a victory.
“We still have some adjustments to make to be ready for the big day,” he noted.
The coach also praised the commitment shown by his players throughout the contest, particularly against a Norwegian side known for its physical strength and ability to transition quickly.
According to Ouahbi, the match provided valuable information for the technical staff as they finalize preparations for the World Cup.
Attention has now turned to the fitness of Mazraoui and Ezzalzouli after both players were unable to complete the match. Ouahbi revealed that the coaching staff is awaiting the outcome of medical examinations before determining the extent of their injuries and any potential impact on Morocco’s World Cup plans.
The national team boss also addressed the situation of defender Nayef Aguerd, confirming that the player continues to progress well in his recovery programme.
Ouahbi stressed that the priority is not necessarily to have Aguerd available immediately for Morocco’s opening World Cup match, but rather to ensure he regains full fitness before returning to competitive action.
On the pitch, Morocco made a bright start and took the lead after just seven minutes through Brahim Diaz. Norway responded in the second half, with Martin Ødegaard finding the equaliser in the 75th minute to secure a 1-1 draw.
The result concludes Morocco’s preparations before the Atlas Lions begin their World Cup campaign. Alongside Brazil, Morocco have been drawn in Group C, which also includes Scotland and Haiti.
