Mohamed Ihattaren has officially pledged his international allegiance to Morocco, ending years of speculation over whether the highly touted midfielder would represent the Netherlands or the country of his heritage.
The 23-year-old, once considered the future of Dutch football, confirmed in an interview with SportNieuwsNL that he has notified the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) of his decision.
“Yes, for me, it will be the Moroccan team from now on. Morocco has always supported me,” Ihattaren stated, drawing a line under what has been a prolonged and complex national team saga.
Ihattaren burst onto the scene as a teenage prodigy at PSV Eindhoven, making headlines across Europe with his creativity, technique, and vision.
At just 17, he chose to align with Ronald Koeman’s Netherlands setup, turning down early overtures from Morocco.
His commitment was prominently announced by the Dutch Football Federation and its sponsor Nike in 2019, symbolising a new generation for the Oranje.
Despite the fanfare, Ihattaren’s international debut for the Netherlands never materialised. While selected on multiple occasions, he never featured in a match for the senior national team.
Off the pitch, his career was soon marred by a series of personal and professional setbacks.
The death of his father, persistent mental health struggles, publicised links to criminal circles, and extended periods without competitive football saw his once-promising path fade into uncertainty.
At one stage, the midfielder considered retiring from the game entirely.
But 2024 has marked a turning point. With a return to action at RKC Waalwijk, Ihattaren has delivered a string of solid performances in the Eredivisie, registering four goals and five assists.
His revival has brought renewed attention, and his decision to represent Morocco adds another layer to his redemption arc.
“I think every step is the right one for me,” he said, reflecting on his resurgence and hinting at aspirations of moving to a higher level once again.
His inclusion could further bolster a Moroccan side already brimming with talent and confidence, following its historic run to the World Cup semi-finals in 2022.
For Ihattaren, wearing the red and green of the Atlas Lions now symbolises not just a new chapter, but a chance to honour his roots while proving that his story is far from over.
