Mohamed El Shenawy is preparing for a showdown seven years in the making.
The Al Ahly captain and goalkeeper is set to meet Luis Suarez once again, this time on a different stage but with familiar tension.
Back in 2018, El Shenawy made headlines when he started Egypt’s first World Cup match in nearly three decades. Chosen over veterans Essam El-Hadary and Sherif Ekramy, he held Uruguay at bay for 89 minutes. Despite a narrow 1-0 loss, El Shenawy stood tall against Suarez and his teammates, making four key saves and earning the Man of the Match award.
Now, the two veterans clash again as Al Ahly faces Inter Miami in the Club World Cup opener in the United States. El Shenawy, now 36, had a strong last season with 17 clean sheets in 33 matches. Suarez, 38, brings his sharp edge too, having netted 8 goals and delivered 9 assists in 21 games for Inter Miami.
Sunday’s match promises a thrilling reunion, El Shenawy guarding the net and Suarez hunting for goals once more on a global stage.
