Algerian international Mohamed Amoura has been ruled out of the upcoming friendly against Sweden after medical tests confirmed an injury sustained during last week’s match against Rwanda.
The 24-year-old forward was forced off the pitch during the encounter on Thursday and underwent further medical evaluation in the following days.
According to an official statement released by the Algerian Football Federation (FAF), the examinations revealed an injury that prevents him from taking part in Algeria’s next fixture, scheduled for Tuesday, 10 June 2025, in Stockholm.
“Following detailed medical checks, it has been confirmed that Mohamed Amine Amoura, who was injured during last Thursday’s game against Rwanda, will be unable to participate in the upcoming friendly against Sweden,” the statement read. “The player has therefore been released from the national team squad by head coach Vladimir Petkovic.”
Amoura’s absence is a significant blow for Petkovic, who is already grappling with a growing list of unavailable players.
His withdrawal marks the latest in a string of setbacks for the national side as they continue preparations for upcoming competitions.
The forward’s departure comes shortly after two other prominent squad members—Youcef Belaïli and Mohamed Amine Tougai—were also released from national duty.
While no official explanation was provided for their exclusion, both players are affiliated with Tunisian side Espérance Sportive de Tunis, which is set to participate in the FIFA Club World Cup beginning on 15 June.
Given the proximity of the Club World Cup, where ES Tunis is expected to face Brazilian side Flamengo in their opening match during the night of 16 to 17 June in the United States, it is widely understood that the club has opted to retain its key players in preparation for the tournament.
Their release from the Algerian camp appears to be a strategic decision to avoid unnecessary risk and to ensure optimal squad fitness for their global campaign.
Coach Petkovic, who took the helm of the national team earlier this year, now faces a reshuffled squad with reduced attacking options as Algeria looks to test its depth and tactical flexibility against Sweden.
The match is seen as a valuable opportunity for the coach to continue building a competitive team ahead of future qualifiers and major tournaments.
Amoura, who plays his club football in Europe, has been a rising figure in Algeria’s frontline and his recent performances have drawn praise from fans and analysts alike.
His injury is expected to be monitored closely by both national team medics and his club as recovery plans are put in place.
Despite the setbacks, the Algerian side will press ahead with their plans in Stockholm, with Petkovic likely to turn to alternative options within the squad to fill the gaps left by Amoura, Belaïli, and Tougai.
The friendly against Sweden is expected to serve as a vital test of the team’s cohesion and depth as they continue their international calendar.
