Modise questions Lookman’s finishing after Atletico draw with Arsenal
Teko Modise has criticised Ademola Lookman for a lack of cutting edge after Atletico Madrid were held to a 1-1 draw by Arsenal in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League semi-final clash.
Lookman, who had been considered a doubt heading into the contest at the Wanda Metropolitano, was trusted to lead the line and completed the full 90 minutes.
However, despite his work rate and attacking presence, the Nigerian forward struggled to make his moments count in the final third, drawing scrutiny from Modise during post-match analysis.
The former Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates star highlighted a key second-half opportunity as emblematic of Lookman’s night. In the 53rd minute, the forward found space to test goal but directed his effort straight at Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya, allowing the visitors to escape without conceding.
“He could have performed better. A remarkable save was made. Whenever he is shooting under such pressure, he needs to think a bit faster,” Modise said on SuperSport.
While acknowledging the difficulty of finishing under pressure at elite level, Modise insisted that players operating at that stage of the competition must demonstrate sharper decision-making in decisive moments.
“I believe he might have selected a better angle away from the goalkeeper to compel him to make an exceptional save,” he added.
The analysis reflects a broader concern around Atletico’s attacking efficiency on the night. Despite creating openings against a disciplined Arsenal side, Diego Simeone’s men were unable to fully capitalise, leaving the tie finely poised ahead of the return leg in London.
Lookman’s performance, though industrious, ultimately underscored the fine margins at Champions League level, where composure and precision often determine outcomes.
