Mikayil Faye targets Africa Cup of Nations spot with Senegal after breakthrough debut
Senegalese defender Mikayil Faye has set his sights on representing his country at the next Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), following his senior international debut in 2024.
The 19-year-old centre-back, currently on the books at French Ligue 1 club Rennes, is determined to establish himself as a regular starter at club level—a crucial step, he believes, toward securing a place in Aliou Cissé’s national squad.
Speaking candidly about his journey, Faye acknowledged that reclaiming a consistent role at Rennes is his immediate priority as he works to earn the trust of Senegal’s technical staff.
“My goal is clear,” said Faye. “I want to be part of the team for the next CAN. But I know that starts with what I do every day at my club. If I’m not playing regularly, I can’t expect a call-up. It’s about staying focused, putting in the work, and proving myself.”
Faye made his international debut earlier this year, an experience he describes as both humbling and motivating. He reflected on the weight of wearing the national colours and the pride that comes with representing Senegal on the continental stage.
The call-up marked a significant milestone in his career, one that has only heightened his resolve to keep developing.
The young defender also spoke of his admiration for two of Senegal’s most iconic footballers—Kalidou Koulibaly and Sadio Mané—both of whom have played instrumental roles in shaping his outlook. Koulibaly, a defensive stalwart who captained Senegal to AFCON glory in 2022, stands as a role model for Faye.
“I look up to Kalidou not just for his football, but for how he carries himself,” Faye explained. “He’s a leader, and I’ve learned a lot just by watching how he reads the game and positions himself. He’s someone I hope to emulate.”
Faye also highlighted the influence of Mané, whose work ethic and humility continue to inspire him. “Sadio is an example for every young Senegalese player.
His success is built on dedication and sacrifice. It reminds me that talent alone is never enough—you have to keep pushing yourself every day.”
Despite the growing attention surrounding his potential, Faye remains grounded. He acknowledges that being labelled a ‘rising star’ comes with pressure, but insists he welcomes the challenge. For him, expectations are not a burden, but rather a source of motivation.
“People talk about pressure, but for me, it’s an opportunity. I know I have a long way to go, but I’m hungry. I’m here to learn, to grow, and to contribute.
If I stay disciplined and keep working, the rest will follow.”
Faye’s mature mindset and deep respect for the game’s defensive greats reflect a player beyond his years. In a footballing landscape often dominated by flair, his focus on the fundamentals of defending is a nod to the values he draws from the legends who came before him.
As the countdown to the next AFCON continues, the young Rennes defender is determined to make his case on the pitch.
With competition for places fierce and Senegal aiming to defend their continental title, Faye knows every minute on the field counts.
For now, his mission remains simple: play, perform, and earn the right to wear the national shirt again.
