Miguel Cardoso open to Al Ahly move as Egyptian giants weigh coaching change
Portuguese coach Miguel Cardoso is open to taking charge of Al Ahly, with sources indicating he would not be deterred even if the club fails to secure a place in next season’s CAF Champions League.
Al Ahly are actively considering a change in leadership following a disappointing campaign in which they fell short in the Egyptian title race and missed out on qualification for Africa’s elite club competition.
Current head coach Jess Thorup is understood to be under increasing pressure as the club evaluates its options ahead of a potential reset.
Cardoso, who has been shortlisted by Al Ahly’s hierarchy as a secondary option, is viewed as a strong candidate due to his recent success and familiarity with African club football.
The Portuguese tactician recently guided Mamelodi Sundowns to a second CAF Champions League title, further strengthening his reputation on the continent.
Despite the growing interest from Cairo, Cardoso is also expected to open discussions with Sundowns over improved contractual terms and a possible extension, should a move to Egypt not materialise.
Sundowns’ continental triumph included a victory over AS FAR in the final, a result that cemented Cardoso’s standing among Africa’s leading coaches.
Al Ahly’s decision in the coming weeks is expected to shape their direction for next season, with the club weighing stability against the need for renewed continental dominance.
