Al Ahly eye Mark van Bommel as top coaching target amid ongoing negotiations

Al Ahly have identified former Netherlands international Mark van Bommel as their leading candidate for the head coach position, with discussions already underway between both parties as the Egyptian giants look to reshape their technical leadership.

The 49-year-old is reportedly seeking a package worth around $4.5 million, with negotiations expected to continue until Tuesday as the club attempts to bridge the gap and reach an agreement.

Sources indicate that Al Ahly are keen to finalise talks swiftly but remain cautious about meeting the full financial demands of the Dutchman, who is being considered as a high-profile appointment to guide the club into a new competitive cycle.

Should negotiations with Van Bommel collapse, Al Ahly are prepared to immediately turn their attention to Miguel Cardoso, who has emerged as the clear alternative on the shortlist.

The Portuguese coach is understood to be open to the opportunity and is not deterred by the possibility that Al Ahly may miss out on CAF Champions League football next season, a factor that often weighs heavily in coaching decisions across the continent.

Al Ahly’s hierarchy are already familiar with Cardoso’s profile and have maintained him as a strong backup option throughout their search process, keeping communication channels active in case talks with their primary target break down.

Cardoso, meanwhile, is also expected to hold discussions with Mamelodi Sundowns regarding improved contractual terms and a possible extension, should a move to Cairo fail to materialise.

With negotiations ongoing and multiple scenarios still in play, Al Ahly’s coaching decision appears set to be resolved in the coming days as the club weighs ambition against financial and sporting considerations.
