Former Liverpool striker Michael Owen has advised the club to reconsider its contract policies in order to secure the long-term future of Mohamed Salah, whose current deal expires on June 30.
Speaking to talkSPORT, Owen stressed the importance of retaining the Egyptian forward and suggested that Liverpool may need to make an exception to their usual contract rules to keep him at Anfield.
“Mo Salah wants to stay, I’m pretty sure of that,” Owen said. “Liverpool have certain rules about contracts, especially when players reach a certain age, but Salah is not like other players.”
The Reds are known for limiting contract extensions to shorter terms for players over a certain age, but Owen argued that Salah’s exceptional fitness and professionalism should warrant special consideration.
“He’s in excellent physical shape, very professional, and always in the gym. You can’t tell me he won’t be at the same level in three or four years,” Owen added.
The 31-year-old forward has been a key figure for Liverpool since joining from Roma in 2017, consistently delivering top performances.
His future remains a major talking point as the club weighs its options regarding a potential contract extension.
Owen concluded by urging Liverpool to break from tradition and offer Salah a longer deal than typically granted to players in his age bracket, emphasizing the forward’s enduring quality and influence on the team.
