Michael Kayode commits international future to Italy over Nigeria
Michael Kayode has confirmed he intends to represent Italy at senior international level, effectively ruling out a future switch to Nigeria despite being eligible for both nations.
The Brentford FC right-back, born in Borgomanero to Nigerian parents, remains eligible for the Super Eagles under FIFA regulations, but has made clear that his international ambitions lie with the country he has represented throughout his youth career.
Kayode has progressed through Italy’s youth national teams and has consistently featured in the Azzurri setup at junior level, shaping a clear pathway towards senior recognition with the European side.
Speaking to Tuttosport, as also reported, the 21-year-old set out his position without ambiguity regarding his international future.
“I will always prioritize Italy. I grew up wearing the Azzurri jersey as a youth player and I hope to realize this dream as soon as possible.”
The statement effectively closes the door on speculation over a potential switch to Nigeria, a scenario that had remained possible given his dual eligibility.
In international football, players with dual nationality may represent more than one country at youth level, but become permanently tied once they make a competitive senior appearance. Kayode’s decision therefore represents a definitive step in shaping his international career.
For Nigeria, the confirmation means one of their potential defensive options will no longer be available for future selection, despite his development in one of Europe’s top leagues.
For Italy, however, the commitment strengthens their pool of emerging talent, with Kayode’s performances in the Premier League with Brentford attracting increasing attention.
Reports in Italy suggest the defender could be included in coach Luciano Spalletti’s upcoming squad for June friendlies against Luxembourg and Greece, potentially marking his first involvement at senior international level.
Having already gained valuable experience at youth level, Kayode is now expected to transition into senior international football with Italy, completing a pathway that began with his early development in the national youth system.
His decision also reflects a wider trend in modern football, where players with multicultural backgrounds often face key choices between their country of heritage and the nation where their careers are developed.
