Since their association with Chelsea in 2005, José Mourinho and Michael Essien have maintained a close relationship. Last season, facing challenges with the Blues, the Ghanaian midfielder found support from Mourinho, who welcomed him on loan to Real Madrid.
Essien’s return to Stamford Bridge has proven beneficial for the former Lyon player, and he has become inseparable from his mentor. Essien recently revealed the reason why he affectionately refers to José Mourinho as “Dad.”
“A lot of people have asked why I call him ‘dad’ sometimes. It’s because he shaped my future and understood who I am, like any good father. Even when he wasn’t at Chelsea, he always wished me good luck before, during, and after the season,” Essien explained. He added, “He was never disloyal to me, and I love him and admire him because of this.” The term “dad” reflects the deep appreciation and respect Essien has for Mourinho, not just as a coach but as someone who played a pivotal role in shaping his career.
