Mfundo Vilakazi backs Kaizer Chiefs to overcome Richards Bay threat

Mfundo Vilakazi says Kaizer Chiefs will travel to Richards Bay with confidence despite the danger posed by their opponents at home in Tuesday night’s Betway Premiership meeting.

Kaizer Chiefs face Richards Bay at Princess Magogo Stadium in KwaZulu-Natal, knowing victory would move them level on points with leaders Orlando Pirates. Pirates strengthened their position at the top of the table by beating Sekhukhune United 2-0 on Tuesday.

The match presents another demanding test for Kaizer Chiefs in KZN. They were beaten 1-0 by Richards Bay on their previous visit last season, leaving the area without any points.

Vilakazi, who is known as ‘Obrigado’, believes Kaizer Chiefs have prepared carefully for the challenge and are ready to deal with the threat posed by the home side.

“Richards Bay are a very good team and especially dangerous at home,” he told the club’s website.

“But we are going there with confidence. Our technical team has done its analysis and we have a game plan that we believe will lead us to victory.

“We are all in a good space and ready for the challenge. We want to build and maintain forward momentum, and that’s how we approach every game. We know the expectations of our amazing fans and we never want to disappoint our fans.”

The result against Richards Bay could have a significant impact on Kaizer Chiefs’ attempt to keep pace with Orlando Pirates, who currently occupy top spot after their midweek success against Sekhukhune United.

However, Vilakazi said the focus within the Kaizer Chiefs camp was on maintaining progress rather than allowing the pressure of the standings to affect their approach.

Richards Bay represent a particularly difficult opponent because of their record at Princess Magogo Stadium, with last season’s narrow win providing an indication of the challenge facing the visitors.

Kaizer Chiefs will therefore look to turn their preparation into a strong performance when they meet the Natal Rich Boyz in KwaMashu. The match is scheduled to kick off at 19:30.
