Messi dressing-room speech before 2026 World Cup final ‘purely tactical’, says Mac Allister’s father

Lionel Messi’s now-viral team talk before Argentina’s 2026 World Cup final defeat to Spain has been described as “purely tactical” and not a sign of internal conflict, according to the father of midfielder Alexis Mac Allister.

The captain’s words inside the dressing room in the United States sparked a wave of speculation on social media after a short clip, broadcast by ESPN, was widely interpreted as a hint of a dressing-room crisis.

But Carlos Mac Allister, a former player and father of Liverpool’s Alexis, insists the comments have been taken out of context and were focused entirely on match strategy rather than any tension within the squad.

Viral clip fuels rumours of Argentina unrest

In the footage, Messi is seen addressing his team-mates before the final against Spain, which Argentina went on to lose 1-0 after extra time.

“Hيا يا شباب، حافظوا على هدويكم. الاهم هو ان تحافظوا على هدويكم,” he says – “Come on lads, stay calm. The most important thing is that you stay calm.”

He then adds a phrase that triggered widespread conjecture online: “دعونا ننسى كل شيء. دعونا نلعب فقط. دعونا نركز على المباراة يا شباب” – “Let’s forget everything. Let’s just play. Let’s focus on the match, lads.”

Those lines prompted some fans and pundits to advance conspiracy theories that Argentina’s camp had been riven by problems in the hours before the final in New Jersey.

‘If I doubted it, imagine everyone else’

Speaking to Argentine radio in comments reported by La Nacion, Carlos Mac Allister admitted that even he initially wondered if something serious had happened behind the scenes.

He said: “ارسلت رسالة الى اليكسيس اساله: ماذا حدث في غرفة الملابس؟ هل وقع شيء؟ اذا كنت انا قد بدات اتساءل، فتخيلوا ما الذي اعتقده الاخرون”.

“I sent a message to Alexis asking him: what happened in the dressing room? Did something occur? If I had started to wonder, imagine what everyone else thought,” he explained.

According to Mac Allister Sr, his son moved quickly to dismiss any notion of a rift, explaining that Messi’s intervention was concentrated on how Argentina should approach the game on the pitch.

‘Part of the game plan, not a crisis’

Carlos Mac Allister said Alexis told him that Messi’s talk was about maintaining composure and sticking to the agreed tactical plan – with an emphasis on keeping the ball and avoiding panic.

He explained that the captain was instructing his team-mates on “التركيز على التمرير، والتحرك، وتبادل المراكز، وعدم اللجوء الى الكرات الطويلة او فقدان الاستحواذ” – focusing on passing, movement, interchanging positions, and steering clear of long balls or cheaply surrendering possession.

The former Boca Juniors defender stressed that the brief excerpt in circulation had been cut in a way that invited misleading interpretations.

He said the controversial lines were simply “جزءا من التعليمات الفنية قبل انطلاق المباراة” – part of the tactical instructions delivered immediately before kick-off, rather than a reaction to any dressing-room argument.

Spain’s superiority, not Argentina’s turmoil

Despite the noise surrounding the clip, Carlos Mac Allister was adamant that Argentina’s defeat was down to Spain’s performance rather than any internal Argentine turmoil.

He insisted all of Lionel Scaloni’s squad “قدموا اقصى ما لديهم” – gave everything they had – but were ultimately second best on the night against a Spain side he described as superior over 120 minutes.

By full-time, Spain had secured a 1-0 victory after extra time to claim the 2026 World Cup, leaving Messi and Argentina denied back-to-back titles following their triumph at Qatar 2022.

For Mac Allister’s father, the post-match narrative about a supposed crisis in the Albiceleste camp is a story built on a misread moment.

In his view, Messi’s now-scrutinised words were simply those of a captain trying to calm his team, clear their minds and refocus them on the football – not a signal of a team in disarray.
