MC Alger is gearing up for a high-stakes encounter against Sudan’s Al Hilal in the CAF Champions League Group A match at Nouakchott’s Chikha Ould Boidiya Stadium.
Tunisian coach Khaled Benyahia and central defender Ayoub Ghezzala have expressed cautious optimism ahead of the match, emphasizing respect for their opponents but reiterating their determination to secure victory.
Speaking at a pre-match press conference, Ghezzala acknowledged Al Hilal’s strength, particularly after their earlier win in Algiers, but stressed MC Alger’s readiness to rise to the occasion.
“It will be a great match. We now have a better understanding of this team that defeated us at home. Our new technical staff has rejuvenated the squad, encouraging us to remain focused.
Hilal is a strong side, but we have what it takes to make a difference despite some absences,” Ghezzala remarked.
Benyahia echoed his defender’s sentiments, emphasizing the need for concentration and resilience on the continental stage.
Reflecting on his previous experience in Mauritania, he noted, “The team is steadily improving under the new approach. Injuries are a concern, but we have capable replacements.
Al Hilal has built a reputation over the last few years, and their position in this group is no surprise. It’s going to be a tough game, especially given the challenges of playing on African pitches, whether artificial or natural grass.”
The coach also pointed out the competitive nature of Group A, describing it as the most challenging in the competition.
“With TP Mazembe and Simba gaining momentum, the group is incredibly tight. I believe the final round of matches will determine who advances. Al Hilal, however, seems well-positioned to qualify,” he explained.
Simba SC’s 3-1 victory over TP Mazembe earlier has added further complexity to Group A.
The Tanzanian side is now level on points with MC Alger, with both teams sitting at four points, while Al Hilal leads the group.
Simba’s resurgence poses a serious threat to Al Hilal’s top spot, especially if the Sudanese side falters against MC Alger.
For MC Alger, Sunday’s clash is critical but not definitive. “This match is important but not decisive. With two more games remaining, anything is possible,” Ghezzala concluded.
As Group A remains wide open, the stakes are higher than ever for all four teams.
For MC Alger, a win could be the lifeline they need to keep their quarter-final hopes alive, while Al Hilal will aim to cement their place at the top.
