Mbule reveals why he chose Orlando Pirates over Kaizer Chiefs

Sipho Mbule has revealed that he turned down an opportunity to join Kaizer Chiefs after leaving Mamelodi Sundowns, instead signing for their Soweto rivals Orlando Pirates.

The 28-year-old midfielder said advice from several people, including former coach Rulani Mokwena, helped shape his decision after his contract with Sundowns ended in 2025.

Mbule, nicknamed ‘The Master Chef’, discussed the transfer choice in the Giants documentary, explaining that Chiefs were among the clubs interested in securing his services.

“Firstly, my contract with Sundowns ended. There’s other teams also that wanted to sign me. Even Chiefs approached me. The people and coaches that I spoke to like coach Rulani told me that the best team to join is Pirates because I think there was an opportunity for him to make a comeback [to the team],” he said.

The midfielder’s comments indicate that the possibility of Mokwena returning to Orlando Pirates was an important factor as he considered offers from the two biggest clubs in Soweto.

Mokwena’s potential return to the club appears to have influenced Mbule’s assessment of his options, although the coach ultimately did not feature in the midfielder’s one-season spell with The Buccaneers.

Mbule joined Orlando Pirates after departing The Brazilians and made 23 appearances across all competitions during his time with the club.

Despite spending only one season at Orlando Pirates, he finished his spell with three winners’ medals. He was part of the squad that won the MTN8, the Carling Knockout and the Betway Premiership.

His time in South Africa has now come to an end, with the playmaker moving abroad to continue his career.

Mbule has signed for Iraqi club Zakho SC, beginning a new chapter after leaving the Betway Premiership champions.
