Mbokazi’s Finland surgery puts European transfer hopes on hold

South Africa defender Mbokazi will remain with Chicago Fire during the current transfer window after a thigh injury ended his 2026 season and prevented a potential move to Europe.

The 20-year-old, who attracted significant interest from overseas clubs after impressing for Bafana Bafana at the recent FIFA World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico, is set to travel to Finland in the coming days for surgery.

His agent, Basia Michaels of QT Sport, confirmed to SABC Sport that clubs in Italy were among those understood to be monitoring the central defender. However, the injury means any transfer discussions will have to wait.

The setback was confirmed after Chicago Fire head coach Gregg Berhalter revealed that Mbokazi requires an operation following the thigh tear. He will now miss the rest of Chicago Fire’s 2026 campaign.

“Any transfer for Mbokazi would require him to successfully complete a medical, and the current situation makes that impossible because of the severity of his injury. Unfortunately, any plans to transfer the player will have to be put on hold,” Michaels said.

Mbokazi’s performances at the World Cup had strengthened his reputation and encouraged growing interest from several clubs outside the MLS. A move had appeared increasingly possible either before the end of the current transfer window or during the January window.

Michaels said the player’s recovery was now the immediate priority and confirmed that a specialist in Finland would carry out the procedure.

“We’ve been working over the past week to determine the best course of action for his recovery. He will now head to Finland to work with a specialist and have the operation. There remains interest in his services, but at the moment that’s something we simply cannot explore because of the current setback.”

Chicago Fire have played 18 matches this season, with Mbokazi taking part in 12 of them. His absence leaves the MLS side without one of their key central defenders for the remainder of the campaign.

The injury is also a major blow to Bafana Bafana and to the national team’s incoming head coach. Mbokazi is now expected to miss South Africa’s opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying fixtures, which are scheduled for September, October and November.

South Africa will be seeking qualification for the tournament, which will be co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda under the successor to Hugo Broos.

Any European transfer interest is therefore likely to remain in place while Mbokazi completes his rehabilitation, but no move can be explored until he is fit enough to undergo a medical.
