Mbokazi injury rules Chicago Fire defender out for 2026 season and Bafana qualifiers
Chicago Fire defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi will miss the remainder of the 2026 MLS season after suffering a thigh muscle tear, dealing a major setback to both his club and South Africa.
The injury also threatens to disrupt Bafana Bafana’s plans for their upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign, with Mbokazi expected to be unavailable for crucial matches later this year.
Chicago Fire coach Gregg Berhalter confirmed on Thursday that the defender was injured in training after returning from the 2026 Fifa World Cup. Mbokazi played a key role in South Africa’s run to the knockout stages of the tournament, which was held in Mexico and the US.
“Mbo being ruled out for the year is a tough one,” Berhalter told Apple TV.
The coach said the team would now have to respond collectively to the defender’s absence, particularly by improving its defensive organisation.
“It’s really about the next person stepping up and being a team that’s hard to score on, closing the spaces, being compact. We’re working on that now and I think today you’re going to see that.”
Mbokazi has made a strong impression during his debut season with Chicago Fire. He started 12 regular-season matches before the injury forced him to withdraw from the MLS All-Star game, having already been selected as an MLS All-Star.
The defender’s absence will also be a significant concern for whoever takes charge as the new Bafana coach. South Africa are due to face Guinea and Eritrea in important 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in September.
They will then play Kenya twice in November, with Mbokazi set to miss those matches as well because of the injury.
Mbokazi featured in every minute of South Africa’s four World Cup matches. His performances at the tournament and for Chicago Fire had established him as an important option in defence before the thigh problem brought his season to an early end.
For Chicago Fire, the injury removes a player who had started more than a dozen regular-season games in his first MLS campaign. For South Africa, it leaves the national team without a defender who was ever-present during their World Cup campaign as they prepare for a demanding sequence of Afcon qualifiers.
The timing of the injury means both sides must now find alternatives for the rest of the year, while Mbokazi begins his recovery from the thigh muscle tear.
