M’Baye Niang’s time at Wydad Athletic Club has come to a premature end, marking yet another chapter in the striker’s nomadic career.
At 30 years old, Niang leaves the Casablanca-based club after just three months, having joined in September from Empoli.
This move, the 13th of his career, highlights the instability that has plagued the Senegalese forward throughout his professional journey.
According to sources within the club, Niang’s departure stems from a deteriorating relationship with his coach, Rulani Mokwena.
Despite only scoring two goals in eight appearances for Wydad, Niang had not been underperforming to the extent of warranting his exit based on his on-field contributions alone.
However, the underlying issue appears to be his lack of cooperation with Mokwena, which ultimately led to his departure.
Jamal Waalam, a journalist for 2M TV, shared insights into the situation, noting that the striker’s attitude had been a consistent issue throughout his career.
“He is a talented player, but he does not meet the requirements of the high level,” Waalam stated.
The journalist explained that Niang’s lack of discipline and behavioral problems, which had been criticized in the locker room, made it difficult for him to thrive in demanding environments like Wydad.
Despite receiving support from fans, Niang’s inability to maintain the necessary mindset for top-level football has hindered his progress.
Niang’s instability is a theme that has run through his career. He has been unable to secure a lasting place in any of his previous clubs, with his most recent tenure at Wydad being no exception.
The striker has not played for the Senegal national team since 2019 and has moved between several clubs in a short period, including Adana Demirspor, FC Empoli, and Wydad AC, in just one year.
Waalam suggests that while Niang possesses undeniable talent, he lacks the consistency and work ethic required to succeed at the highest levels of football.
With his departure from Wydad, Niang’s future remains uncertain.
He may attract interest from other clubs due to his skill, but Waalam cautions that without a change in mindset, his career trajectory could continue to stagnate.
“It’s a real waste,” Waalam added, reflecting on Niang’s potential that has not been fully realized.
The former AC Milan player now faces the challenge of reinventing himself, with his future in professional football at a crossroads.
