Mbaye Niang has declared his readiness to return to international duty for Senegal, stating that he remains available to represent the national team should head coach Pape Thiaw decide to call on him.
The 30-year-old striker, who has not featured for the Teranga Lions in recent years, said he has not given up hope of wearing the national shirt again.
Speaking candidly, the former Rennes forward made it clear he is not pushing for a recall but remains entirely open to one if the technical staff deems him useful.
“There’s been a change of coach. I’ve never spoken to him. If he needs me, I’m at his disposal. If not, he doesn’t need me. I’ll never force myself to come back,” Niang explained.
“I’m available and I want to play again, but I go where I’m needed.”
Niang was a prominent figure in Senegal’s journey to the final of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) under the former head coach Aliou Cissé.
Known for his pace and strength in attack, he was seen as a key contributor to the team during that campaign. However, his international career stalled in the years that followed, and he has been absent from the squad since.
Despite this hiatus, Niang’s remarks show a willingness to reintegrate into the squad as Senegal prepare for the 2025 edition of AFCON in Morocco.
While he acknowledged that a call-up is entirely in the hands of the current coach, he reiterated that he remains committed to the national cause if needed.
His comments come at a time when Senegal’s attacking line is undergoing a transitional phase, with several new faces joining the squad in recent windows.
Whether Niang’s experience and previous contributions could offer value to Thiaw’s tactical setup remains to be seen, but the striker’s availability provides an additional option for a side looking to reclaim continental glory.
Niang, who has represented several clubs across Europe, including AC Milan, Rennes, and Bordeaux, has experienced a varied club career and brings with him a wealth of experience on the international stage. His statement is a reminder of his enduring ambition and belief that he can still contribute meaningfully at the highest level.
As Senegal prepare for the upcoming AFCON, Thiaw will be tasked with assembling a balanced squad capable of competing for the title. Niang’s potential return could offer added depth and leadership, particularly given his familiarity with high-stakes tournament football.
For now, the ball lies in the court of the coaching staff. But with Niang leaving the door wide open, his possible reintegration into the squad could become one of the intriguing subplots in Senegal’s build-up to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
