Mbaye Leye to Depart Zulte Waregem After Eight Seasons
Senegalese striker Mbaye Leye is set to part ways with Zulte Waregem after a successful eight-year tenure in the Belgian Jupiler Pro League. The 34-year-old, who has made a significant mark at the club, confirmed that he will not be continuing with the team beyond the current season.
Despite efforts to negotiate a contract extension, Leye revealed that talks have stalled, leaving him with no option but to leave Essevee once his current deal expires in June 2014.
“We tried to reach an agreement regarding a contract extension, but negotiations are currently at a standstill. This means that I will continue to play for Zulte Waregem until June 2014, but then I will leave the club,” Leye said in a statement.
Leye, who has been an integral part of the club’s attack during his time in Belgium, had been one of Zulte Waregem’s standout players in recent seasons. However, injuries have hindered his progress this year, limiting him to just thirteen appearances in the current campaign.
Despite his setbacks, the Senegalese international has enjoyed a successful career in Belgium, contributing significantly to the club’s victories over the years. With his departure now confirmed, Leye’s next move remains uncertain, but his proven goal-scoring ability and experience in top-flight European football are sure to attract interest from clubs across Europe.
As his time at Zulte Waregem draws to a close, Leye’s future is up in the air, but one thing is clear: his legacy in Belgium, where he became a fan favourite, will not be forgotten.
