Mauritania’s campaign in the upcoming AFCON 2023 has encountered another setback with the unfortunate injury to midfielder Abdallahi Mahmoud. The AC Bellinzona player will be unable to participate in the tournament after sustaining injuries during a friendly match against Tunisia on Saturday, which ended in a goalless draw.
The midfielder suffered a severe blow to his left arm during the game, resulting in a double fracture.
The Mauritanian Federation (FFRIM) officially communicated this unfortunate development on Sunday, emphasizing the need for Abdallahi Mahmoud to undergo surgery promptly.
The Federation assures that the surgery will be conducted under its supervision and monitoring.
The news follows the earlier blow to the Mauritanian squad, which lost goalkeeper Babacar Diop to a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.
These injuries are significant setbacks for the team as they prepare for the continental tournament.
In a press release issued by the Mauritanian Federation, it stated, “Abdallahi Mahmoud will now undergo surgery, under the supervision and monitoring of the Federation.”
This announcement has cast a shadow over the team’s preparations and aspirations for AFCON 2023.
Mauritania finds itself in a challenging Group D at AFCON 2023, alongside formidable opponents Algeria, Angola, and Burkina Faso.
The Mourabitounes will now have to face these tough adversaries without the services of Abdallahi Mahmoud, adding to the complexities of their campaign in the prestigious African football event.
