Mauritanian Football Federation has announced the contract extension of national team head coach Amir Abdou following an outstanding AFCON 2023 campaign.
With his current contract ending on March 1, 2024, the French/Comorian tactician has inked another two-year contract extending his time with the Mourabitounes until 2026.
The 51-year-old guided the Mourabitounes to a historic campaign in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire, reaching the knockout stage for the first-ever time.
Mauritania stunned 2019 AFCON winners, Algeria, in their last group game to advance to the next round, where they lost narrowly to Cape Verde in the Round of 16.
Abdou was linked to the vacant Ghana job a few days ago, with the reports suggesting a lucrative USD45,000 per month salary offer from the Ghana Football Association.
Nonetheless, the Mauritanian Football Federation, through their official social networks, announced Abdou has signed a new contract on Thursday, February 8, 2024.
Abdou is expected to qualify the Mourabitounes to the next Africa Cup of Nations tournament, which will be held in Morocco next year.
The Mauritania under the tutelage of the former Comoros coach will try to secure a place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the USA, Mexico, and Canada.
